Cynthia Masters-Waage

There is nothing more wonderful than a good birth, a happy family and a feeling of community support. I hope my work goes some way towards facilitating this for my clients. I feel lucky to have a career that is never boring. How can it be when each group, each baby, each experience of parenting is new and unique!”

Cynthia began working with parents and children over 25 years ago. This wide ranging experience has included various aspects of child care including the designing and setting up of nurseries, researching the needs of children and parents, offering training for fostering families, teaching sex education and working directly with Under 5's.

A passionate interest in birth and supporting parents, led Cynthia to train through the National Childbirth Trust as an antenatal teacher, qualifying in 1990. She continues to train teachers for the NCT and to run their training days. Cynthia also worked for many years as a birth doula after attending a home birth in 1992 in Windsor Great Park. This work has given her the opportunity to have an insider's view of birth in various settings, which includes all the local hospitals and birth centres as well as various home births. She has also worked with a wide variety of people including those with disabilities and specific needs. As a National Childbirth Trust accredited teacher she offers various classes to local parents in small groups, refreshers classes for second time parents and large classes for the NHS trusts.

A desire to support people in difficult situations led Cynthia to train as an adult psychotherapist and she is now working towards qualification as a child psychotherapist. This work has given her experience with families coming to terms with difficult situations related to birth and parenting including postnatal depression, trauma and attachment issues. This work, in particular, has reinforced Cynthia's belief that birth matters!
